(Avoca) In case they haven’t been tested already, AHSTW’s wrestlers will certainly get challenged before the week is through.
The Vikings are in the midst of a very busy stretch in their schedule. After sweeping AL, Tri-Center, and SW Iowa on Tuesday, they gear up for a home quadrangular with ACGC, East Mills, and Griswold. Head coach Evan McCarthy foresees several hard fought matches Thursday night at home and then things will ratchet up even more so with a loaded tournament at Atlantic/CAM on Saturday. “That’s probably going to be our toughest test of the year. That tournament has always been good in the past. Coach Tim Duff did a good job of getting some more teams to it. It’s probably jumped levels from being a good tournament to being a great tournament. Our guys are going to have their hands full.”
McCarthy gives a positive review of Tuesday’s victories. It represented their first competition following the holiday break. “For the most part I thought the guys got after it pretty hard. I thought we were the aggressor in the majority of our matches which is good sign after a long layoff. They weren’t showing too many signs of breathing heavy so it was a pretty optimistic start for us. The guys did a nice job.”
Denver Pauley, Jaedan Rasmussen, and Garrison Gettler had three pins apiece on Tuesday. McCarthy praises the development of Gettler. “We had a guy step up that’s kind of been on the fence in terms of being a guy we can consistently count on or not. That was Garrison Gettler at 138 and he did a real nice job and hopefully that springboards him a little bit into the second half and gives hims some confidence.”
Gavyn Fischer posted two pins on the night. Seth Kiesel, Michael Shiffer, Aidan Cano, Joel Sampson, Leland Barr, Hayden Fischer, and Brady Canada each had one pin in Tuesday’s quad. Canada’s return from injury provides a big boost to the Viking lineup at heavyweight.
