(Atlantic) Starting on Saturday, May 9, replays of some of the classic Atlantic High School games will be re-aired during Atlantic Sports Saturday, on 95.7 F.M.
This Saturday’s re-broadcast went back to a Class 3A Football game at Trojan Bowl on November 1, 2002. The game featured #1 Harlan, and #3 rated Atlantic. Both teams were 8-0 heading into this season finale. At stake, a district title, and home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs.
One of the key players on that squad was Alan Jenkins, a four-sport standout at Atlantic High School. Jenkins is also the former Head Boy’s Basketball and Track Coach at Atlantic and is currently the Head Boys’ Basketball Coach at Southeast Polk High School.
Jenkins was a receiver and defensive back for the Trojans. He snagged a Harlan pass early in this game that led to the Trojans first score. Jenkins remembers a lot about this game on that November night, 18-years ago.
Harlan had won eighteen straight football games against the Trojans. The last Trojan victory against the mighty Cyclones at that time was on October 26, 1984.
Jenkins said they didn’t abbreviate practice based on the opponent, because they approached every week of practice with the same business-like attitude.
Jenkins says the game was probably more important for the fans than for the players.
Jenkins remembers the team arriving at Trojan Bowl already packed with fans at 6:00 p.m. for a 7:30 kick-off.
Pre-game for this re-aired game starts at 9:00 a.m., on May 9, on 95.7 F.M.
