(Atlantic) Colton Goodell, (220), of Humboldt, won the final match to break a 29-29 tie to lift his squad over Atlantic/CAM 34-29 in a Regional Final Dual at Atlantic on Tuesday night. The win notched a spot on the bracket for Humboldt in the Class 2A State Duals next week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
The competition was fierce from start to finish, and both teams left everything out on the mat. The dual ultimately came down to bonus points. Each team won seven matches, but Humboldt held the advantage with three falls, two technical falls, and one major decision. Atlantic/CAM posted two falls and two major decisions.
The Trojans built a 19-10 lead through the 138-pound match. Cale Roller, (285), kicked off the competition with a fall, Aybren Moore, (113), and Jaxon Bell, (132), won by decision, Joe Weaver, (126), picked up a major decision. Brian South brought the Atlantic/CAM faithful to their feet with an overtime victory at (138). Kadin Stutzman, (152), won by major decision and Payton Fewson, (170), came away with a pin to push the Trojans total to 29.
For Humboldt, Cole Nelson, (106), won by major decision, Cresten Craven, (120), and Levi Naeve, (160), won by falls, and Joe Weydert, (145), and Logan Nilles, (182), scored Tech falls. Walt Delanoit’s decision at (195), tied the score at 29-29. It came down to the final match, and Colton Goodell, (220), came through with a fall in 5:43. The officials took one point away in that final match for unsportsmanlike conduct to settle out the team score at 34-29.
“We talk to kids from day one about success is going hard and putting 14-wrestlers on the mat who will battle,” said Atlantic/CAM Head Coach Tim Duff. “I thought our kids came out and fought hard, and that’s all we can ask.
The Trojans are a young squad with just two seniors. Coach Duff pointed to freshman Brian South’s overtime win at 138. “I thought Brian South had a big win for a freshman,” said Duff. “His takedown in overtime on this type of stage showed a lot of heart. That’s something for him to build on. But up and down the lineup, I thought we competed hard. That was a fun high school dual. The fans were into it, and we’re proud of our kids.
“We tip our cap to Coach Beaman and Humboldt tonight; they did enough to get it done, and they wrestled extremely hard, “said Duff. “I think this was one of the better duals I’ve been involved in over the past several years.”
Atlantic/CAM earned a spot in the finals with a 46-29 win over Red Oak. The Trojans raced out to a 24-0 lead with four straight pins by Devin McKay, (220), Cale Roller, (285), Easton O’Brien, (106), and Aybren Moore, (113). Joe Weaver, (126), and Brian South, (138), added to the Trojans pin count, Tanner O’Brien, (145), won by major decision and Kadin Stutzman, (152), won by forfeit.
Atlantic/CAM now turns their attention to the District tournament at Atlantic on Saturday, where the Trojans will field seven qualifiers. The meet starts at noon.
