(Des Moines, IA) — Both candidates running for Iowa Governor agree that using the state’s I-WILL program will help fund needed improvements to the state’s water quality. Republican nominee Zach Lahn says that’s the first step.
Democratic nominee for Iowa Governor Rob Sand wants to use the state I-WILL program to clean up Iowa water. Sand also wants to give farmers tax credits for conservation practices and nutrient management plans. Poor water quality concerns are linked to Iowa’s rising cancer crisis.
Sand says using the I-WILL program requires a sales tax increase approved by the Legislature.
Lahn also supports using the I-WILL program, which will require the Legislature to approve a sales tax increase.
Both candidates’ proposals have made clean water a prominent issue in the 2026 Iowa governor’s race.
