(Provo, UT) — 8th ranked BYU held off Iowa St.’s upset bid with a 24-10 win in a Big 12 football game on Friday night.
The Cougars Bear Bachmeier looked like a Heisman Trophy candidate — he was 22 of 30 passing for 329 yards and 2 TD and he rushed for 109 yards on 9 carries.
Jaylen Raynor was held to just 98 yards passing with 1 TD. Aiden Flora had 17 carries for 86 yards.
Iowa St. falls to 3-3 and 1-2 in the Big 12 while BYU goes to 5-0 and 3-0.
BYU led 14-3 at the half on a Journee Tonga 6 yard TD run and Bachmeier short TD pass to K. Kasper.
At the end of the 3rd quarter, Bachmeier connected with Legend Glasker on a 76 yard TD pass to make it 21-3.
ISU stalled on their next drive and kicked it back to BYU but Tiger Bachmeier fumbled it and T. Sanders recovered it for the Cyclones at the BYU 49. Six plays later Jaylen Raynor lobbed a one yard TD pass to Christian Greenlaw to cut the lead to 21-10.
A BYU punt would pin the Cyclones at their own 3 but Aiden Flora broke a 21 yard run to get out of jail. Facing a 4th and 2, Flora got the ball and wanted to throw the ball, then got away from traffic, reversed to the opposite side of the field and picked up the first down on a 21 yard run. The driver, however, stalled and Kyle Konrady had a chance to make it a one score game but missed a 46 yard field goal.
The Cougars added a field goal late to put the game away.
Iowa St. has a bye next week — they visit Arizona on Saturday, October 24, kickoff to be determined, coverage on KSOM.
