(Des Moines, IA) — A one-point-four billion-dollar tax incentive bill aimed at attracting a steel plant to Southeast Iowa is a step closer to reality. Republican Lee County Representative Blaine Watkins says the plan will breathe new life into his home county.
Democratic Johnson County Representative Elinor Levin says she thinks the plan is a bad deal for Iowa.
Democratic Johnson County Representative David Jacoby says he has concerns about the package’s cost for Iowa families.
Republican Dallas County Representative Carter Nordman says the package has safeguards for Iowa taxpayers.
The Iowa House passed the bill on a 75-17 vote this afternoon. Supporters say the 15-billion-dollar plant, to be completed in 2030, will create 17-hundred jobs. The Iowa Senate will now take up the bill.
