Mrs. Betty Placzek, age 93, of Atlantic, IA, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Adel Acres in Adel, IA.
Public visitation with the family will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, October 2, 2026, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, IA, with Fr. Brad Robey as the Celebrant. Interment will take place following the Mass at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery.
A reception will take place following the interment in the Reception Hall of the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Betty was born in Columbus, NE. She attended school at St Anthony in Columbus where she was active in school plays and served on the school yearbook committee. During Betty’s teen years, she worked as a soda jerk at the local soda fountain, also at a record store, both of which she loved. Betty married John “Jack” Placzek in 1952 in Columbus. They lived in Orange, CA then Hawaii during Jack’s service in the Marine Corps. At this time, their first child was born. After time living in Grand Island, Lincoln, Omaha, and Council Bluffs, they made their home in Atlantic in 1959.
Betty and Jack owned and operated Atlantic Credit Bureau for 28 years. Betty was a homemaker keeping very busy with her six children. She loved cooking, baking and caring for the home she and Jack both loved. She enjoyed playing cards with friends, especially Pinochle. She was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where she loved baking pies for their annual bazaar. She was know by family and friends for “the best pie crust ever”.
Betty and Jack enjoyed traveling to Europe. Her later travels included favorites of Paris, Switzerland, New Zealand, a Rhine River cruise, and Alaskan cruise.
Survivors include: one son, David, of Iowa City, IA; four daughters, Karen (Darrel) Madsen of Newark, OH, Nancy (Don) Nevins of Adel, IA, Linda (Brian) Wilson of Indianola, IA, Julie (Dan) Lovell of Yorba Linda, CA; many grandchildren, and great grandchildren; son-in-law Randy Kern of Atlantic.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Placzek; her parents, Peter and Ann (Backman) Dischner; her sister, Mary Jane Bernt; her daughter, Cindy Kern, and special friend Henry “Hank” Hockenberger.
