(Des Moines) A Common Sense Institute study shows Iowa remains among the nation’s most affordable states for homeownership and could eliminate its housing shortage by the end of 2028.
Iowa ranks eighth nationally based on the cost of a new mortgage. However, a typical purchase now requires over 40% more income than the average income earns.
The institute estimates Iowa will face a shortage of about 8,100 homes in 2026. Researchers say continued construction at current levels could close that gap by the end of 2028.
