(Guthrie Co.) Guthrie County is asking residents to complete a survey about the proposed replacement of the South Street bridge in Panora.
The Iowa Department of Transportation, in partnership with more than 20 counties and cities, is applying for funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Competitive Highway Bridge Program. The program will award up to $350 million in 2026 for critical bridge infrastructure projects nationwide.
The Guthrie County bridge included in the funding request is the South Street bridge in Panora, which spans the Middle Raccoon River near Lenon Mill Park.
The bridge is more than 60 years old and is in need of a full replacement. County officials say replacing the bridge would improve safety, maintain an important connection between Panora, rural residents and recreational traffic, provide easier access for agricultural-related transportation and support sustainable economic growth in Panora and Guthrie County.
Residents are being asked to provide input on how they currently use the bridge and their thoughts on a potential wider, safer structure capable of carrying heavier loads.
The survey is expected to take no more than five minutes to complete. County officials are encouraging residents to participate and provide feedback to help the Iowa DOT as it considers the proposed bridge replacement.
