(Red Oak) Two people suffered minor injuries in a single-vehicle accident in Red Oak this (Monday) afternoon.
The Red Oak Police Department responded to the accident at 12:12 p.m. near the intersection of South Broadway Street and 3rd Avenue.
A 2018 Jeep Cherokee, driven by 81-year-old Ronald Paul Allen of Clarinda, was traveling on South Broadway Street. Allen had a medical issue, which caused him to pass out while driving and press the accelerator. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a streetlight. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn before colliding with several decorative trees planted along the boulevard. The vehicle ultimately came to rest upright on a retaining wall.
Allen became trapped inside the vehicle and was extricated by emergency personnel using hydraulic rescue equipment.
A passenger, 82-year-old Phyllis Ann Allen of Clarinda, was able to exit the vehicle without assistance.
The Jeep Cherokee sustained approximately $15,000 damage and was declared a total loss. The damage to the street light and decorative trees is estimated at approximately $6,000.
The Red Oak Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Red Oak Fire Department, Red Oak Rescue, the City of Red Oak Street Department, and Montgomery County Dispatch.
