(Massena) The Cass County Education Pond near Massena was renovated, drained, and dredged in early 2024.
Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen says the DNR recently stocked pre-spawn adult bass and bluegill in that same year. He says after the completion of the project, the DNR stocked pre-spawn adult bass and bluegill in April of that same year.
Lorenzen says that, looking back, the pond in that area received five to six inches of rain, went from quite low to full overnight, and looked like chocolate milk. He says they assume that is why they did not see a strong year class of bass.
Lorenzen says they stocked these 100 bass to help eat some of the small bluegill and to boost the number of spawners going into next spring.
