(Lewis) — With the Fourth of July holiday approaching, many people are expected to spend time on area lakes and rivers.
According to Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen, boaters should ensure there is a life jacket available for every passenger on board. Iowa law requires children ages 12 and younger to wear a life jacket while on a boat, and Kayaks.
For those planning to paddle on rivers, Lorenzen recommends letting someone know your plans before heading out. He also advises against going alone whenever possible and encourages paddlers to bring a companion.
Lorenzen adds, it is always best to be prepared and have a first aid kit packed no matter what you are doing, especially if you are out in nature far from help.
