(Pottawattamie Co) The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors signed the Elder Abuse Awareness Month Proclamation early on Tuesday morning. The proclamation declares June 2026 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month.
Board Chair Susan Miller read the proclamation during the June 2 meeting. It stated that one in 10 older Americans have experienced neglect, abuse, or exploitation. These events often go unreported and the victims are not able to get the support they need.
Preventing and raising awareness about elder abuse improves the quality of life for these valued members of the community. This can be achieved through providing education, advocating for new policies, and improving the aging services network.
Miller said every member of the community shares the responsibility of promoting the safety, wellbeing, and dignity of older adults.
