(Underwood, IA) — Underwood Baseball stayed undefeated with the game winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning to beat Tri Center 5-4 in a Western Iowa Conference match up.
Maddox Mechaelsen for the Eagles had been 0-4 in the game but he came up with the bases loaded in the 8th and chopped one on the left side that got by the Trojans SS Cael Witt and Blake Brensel came home with the game winning run.
Underwood built a 4-0 lead — in the bottom of the 2nd, the Eagles got two runs on threes hit, one on a Trojan error the other on a RBI single by Coltin Johnson. Two more runs in the 3rd came on back to back RBI hits from Owen Fletcher and Blake Brensel.
Brensel had a no hitter going for the Eagles until Joey Splichal broke it up with a one out single in the top of the 5th. After Cameron Cook walked and Brody Wiedner popped out, Cael Witt drilled a 2 run double and scored on a Underwood error to cut the lead to 4-3.
Witt would tie the game in the top of the 7th — Cook got a leadoff walk and stole 2nd. Wiedner struck out but Witt lined the first pitch from Brensel that was barely above the dirt to left for a RBI single and it was 4-4.
In the top of the 8th, Tri Center got a runner to 2nd but new pitcher Johnson struck out Braden Meyer to end the inning. In the bottom of the 8th, Trenton Huebner was in now for starter Cael Witt and he gave Brensel a leadoff walk. Gabe Burns singled and after Johnson flied out, both runners moved up on a balk. Pinch hitter Jayden Van Scoyk walked to load the bases and Wiedner came in to relieve Huebner. Mechaelson greeted him with a chopper on the left side that got through and Brensel scored to end the game.
It was the 9th straight win for Underwood against Tri Center.
