(Des Moines) Severe thunderstorms swept across west-central and southwest Iowa late last night and into the early morning hours this morning, producing large hail and damaging wind gusts in several communities.
According to reports from the National Weather Service, one-inch diameter hail was reported in Woodbine in Harrison County at 11:56 p.m. Sunday. The report was relayed by local law enforcement officials.
Strong winds were also reported as the storms moved through the region overnight. At 2:08 a.m. Monday, a thunderstorm wind gust of 63 mph was recorded approximately four miles west-northwest of Oakland in Pottawattamie County. The report was submitted by a member of the public.
The storms were part of a larger system that moved across western Iowa, bringing periods of heavy rain, lightning, and severe weather conditions. No immediate reports of significant damage or injuries were available.
