Iowa Job Market Expands in January With 6,400 New Positions
(Undated) — More Iowans are working, with the state adding 6,400 jobs in January. Beth Townsend, Director of Iowa Workforce Development says the largest gains came from construction, manufacturing and education, and health services sectors. Iowa’s unemployment rate held steady at three-point-four-percent, almost one-percent lower than the national average of four-point-three-percent.
Bill Banning City, County Governments From Issuing Their Own IDs Heads To The Iowa Governor’s Desk
(Undated) — A bill that would ban city and county governments from issuing their own identification cards is heading to the governor’s desk. The Iowa House passed the bill last month, and the Senate passed it on Tuesday. Johnson, Marshall, and Story Counties currently offer their own IDs. Johnson County Supervisor Rod Sullivan tells Iowa’s News Now the ID cards can be used for access to banks, libraries, and other community services, and cannot be used to buy tobacco products or alcohol. Governor Kim Reynolds will decide if the bill will become state law.
Iowa Ranks High For Kids Health Care And Oral Health
(Undated) — Iowa ranked the highest in the midwest when it comes to health care for children. A new study by WalletHub looks at 33 factors relating to the cost, quality and access to children’s health care. Iowa came in 9th nationwide, and fifth best for oral health for kids. But, when it comes to childrens’ nutrition, physical activity, and obesity, Iowa comes in at 22nd.
Iowa DNR Seeks Volunteers To Study And Capture Bumble Bees
(Undated) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is looking for volunteers to help count bumble bees across the state. It’s called the Iowa Bumble Bee Atlas, a statewide science project aimed at tracking and conserving Iowa’s bumble bees. Volunteers will receive online training, with work beginning June 1st through October. Last year, volunteers spotted 13 species and logged more than 7,000 bees.
