(Atlantic, IA) — Iowa will have a new State Auditor next year and there are two Republicans that are looking to run for the office that came to the Candidates Forum in Atlantic this past Tuesday. Current Iowa Lt. Governor Chris Cournoyer and Iowa County Supervisor Abigail Maas will compete in the June 2 Primary to see who will run against Democrat Attorney Taylor Wettach.
Cournoyer accuses the current Auditor Rob Sand of not doing his job and spending more time on his governor campaign and cited an example
Cournoyer also wants to modernize the auditor’s office
There have been many towns and communities including Atlantic that have suffered from fraud with local agencies. Maas says she does not want to pursue other offices, just the auditor’s position and says she wants to make helping Iowa cities and towns prevent that from happening
Maas believes that there can be better transparency by putting all the state money spent by the legislature online for all to see, however, she says it will not be feasible to do that at the local level
Cournoyer is originally from Dallas, TX but moved to Le Claire, IA outside of the Quad Cities. Maas lives on a farm in Williamsburg, IA.
