(Nodaway, Iowa) On Saturday evening, the Villisca Fire Department was dispatched to 408 3rd Street in Nodaway for a residential structure fire. Corning Fire Department was also dispatched on auto-aid.
According to Villisca Fire Chief John Bruce, the residents had evacuated prior to firefighters’ arrival. Firefighters arrived to find a two-story residential structure with flames visible on the west side. Crews verified all occupants were out and began a defensive fire attack.
As additional firefighters arrived, crews were able to transition to an interior fire attack. The fire appears to have started inside the west interior wall, spread through the north interior walls, and extended into the second-floor interior walls. This created suppression challenges, requiring firefighters to open walls and ceilings to access the fire.
Additional aid was requested and received from multiple agencies. No injuries were reported. The residence is not habitable at the time of the report. The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist the residents.
Responding agencies included Villisca Fire Department, Villisca EMS, Corning Fire Department, Prescott Fire Department, Grant Fire Department, Stanton Fire Department, Elliott Fire Department, MCSO Sheriff’s Office, MCSO Communications, Adams County Ambulance, Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Adams County Communications, MidAmerican Utilities, and Southwest Iowa Water Utilities.
