(Des Moines) Critical fire weather conditions are expected to develop across parts of southern and northwestern Iowa today, creating an elevated risk for rapidly spreading wildfires. Residents in these areas should exercise extreme caution and avoid any activities that could spark a fire.
Winds will shift from the southwest to the west-northwest around midday, increasing to sustained speeds of 15 to 25 mph. Gusts could reach up to 30 mph during the afternoon hours. These stronger winds will significantly enhance the potential for fire growth and spread, especially in open areas.
At the same time, relative humidity is forecast to drop below 25 percent in locations without snow cover. In these snow-free areas, dry grasses and other fuels are highly susceptible to ignition. The combination of low humidity, dry vegetation, and gusty winds creates a dangerous environment for fire starts.
Any fires that ignite today are likely to spread quickly and become difficult to control. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Residents are urged to secure trailer chains, properly dispose of cigarettes, avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately to local authorities.
Taking preventive measures now can help reduce wildfire risk and protect lives and property.
