(Puerto Vallarta) The atmosphere in Puerto Vallarta is far calmer today after unrest erupted over the weekend when cartel members reacted violently to the death of the crime boss known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Jane and Craig Becker of Atlantic reached the area on February 6. By Sunday, authorities had locked it down, including the airport, after violence erupted in response to the death of El Mencho, with vehicles burned and shops set on fire.
Becker said flights resumed Monday afternoon and are operating as scheduled today. She added that everything else — including the beaches and stores — is now open.
Mexican authorities have deployed additional security forces and continue to maintain a strong presence to stabilize the region.
Local businesses and attractions have started reopening as parts of Puerto Vallarta return to normal operations, though the situation remains delicate.
