Store Manager Hit By Vehicle During Bomgaars Robbery
(Sioux City, IA) — Police say a man suffered a skull fracture as a result of a Sioux City robbery. The store manager of Bomgaars allegedly chased four suspects to their vehicle after they stole about eleven-hundred dollars worth of goods from the store. As they drove away, they struck him with the car, knocking him onto the hood. The driver then slammed on the breaks, causing him to launch onto the pavement where the skull fracture occurred. Two people have been arrested and authorities are still investigating the case.
Hundreds Attend Trump Rally As More Protest Outside
(Clive, IA) — President Donald Trump is encouraging supporters to vote during the upcoming midterm elections this year. He made remarks at the Horizon Events Center in the Des Moines suburb of Clive on Tuesday. While hundreds of his supporters were in attendance, many more rallied outside in protest of recent ICE shootings in Minnesota. Two protesters interrupted the speech inside the center. Trump spoke about a variety of topics, including his potential selection of a new Federal Reserve Chairman and legislation to make E15 ethanol available for sale across the country year-round.
Iowa Senate Advances Bill Prohibiting Eminent Domain With Amendments Pending
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa senators are advancing a House-passed bill prohibiting eminent domain for carbon pipelines. The bill passed subcommittee but Senate Majority Leader Mike Klimesh says he’s planning amendments to the bill. Klimesh chairs the subcommittee that passed the bill through. Senator Janet Petersen is on the subcommittee, but she voted against advancing the bill. She said supports the law banning the use of eminent domain, but called his amendment tactics a “bait and switch.”
Three Candidates Vying For West Des Moines City Council
(West Des Moines, IA) — Three candidates are running for the open seat on the West Des Moines City Council. A special election will be held on February 17th for the seat vacated by state Senator Renee Hardman. Hardman was the first Black City Councilwoman in west Des Moines and is currently the first Black woman in the state Senate. Shad Clayton, Fannette Elliott and Katherine Harrington are the three candidates running to replace her. If none of them get more than 50-percent of the vote, a runoff will be held on March 7th.
State Senators Reject Bill Preventing Judicial Review Of Legislation
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa State Senators are rejecting a bill designed to prevent judicial review. The bill’s sponsor, Senator Jeff Taylor of Sioux Center, says there is an imbalance between the judicial and legislative branches when it comes to overriding veto power. He acknowledged that the bill would significantly change the governing system that the state has operated on for decades. He also said, “Judges who are not chosen by the people should not have a de facto veto on laws created by the people’s elected representatives.”
