(Atlantic) Atlantic City Councilman Jeremy Butler, a member of the Personnel and Finance Committee, reported to the city council on Wednesday night that have interviewed eight candidates for the city clerkâs position. Butler says they offered the job to one individual, but she turned it down. He says they sent out letters to the other seven candidates letting them know the city is moving in another direction. Meanwhile, Butler says they received another resume.
In the meantime, the City Council on Wednesday appointed Rich Tupper as acting City Clerk, and approved a new professional services agreement with former City Clerk Barb Barrick.
Butler added that the Personnel and Finance committee has also started meeting with the various city department heads. The focus of those meetings is to explain the possible legislation that may be coming down the pike involving the various property tax reduction bills on the table, capping local government property tax revenue.
Senate Republicans, Governor Kim Reynolds, and House Republicans now have competing bills to alleviate property taxes. House Republicans unveiled their plan on Wednesday to cap local government property tax revenue growth at two percent per year, with exceptions for school funding and debt service. It would also establish a 25-thousand-dollar exemption for all residential property. Analysts say the three plans show both the urgency of the issue and the lack of consensus on how to fix it. Democrats have also issued a plan that includes a tax freeze for seniors and say there is optimism that all sides will reach common ground.
