(Washington D.C.) Representatives Zach Nunn, of Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, a Colonel in the Air Force Reserve, and Don Davis (NC-01) introduced the CHAMP VA Filing Extension Act , bipartisan legislation to extend the filing window for Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) health benefits to a full year after notice of eligibility.
Nunn said the CHAMP VA Filing Extension Act closes this gap by ensuring no veteran family loses access to earned benefits due to red tape or administrative delays outside their control.
In summary, the bill would extend the CHAMPVA filing deadline from 180 days to one year, giving families more time to complete required paperwork and avoid losing vital health coverage. It also aims to ease coordination issues between Medicare and CHAMPVA by reducing timing conflicts, and it directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to issue clear regulations to ensure the extended deadline is applied consistently.
