(Denison, Iowa) A lucky Powerball® player who purchased their ticket at a western Iowa convenience store is now a millionaire.
The $1 million-winning ticket was bought at Kimmes Denison Country Store, located at 1108 Fourth Ave. S. in Denison. The ticket matched the first five numbers in the Saturday, September 9 drawing, but missed the Powerball. Still, that combination was enough to win a $1 million prize.
The winning numbers for Saturday’s drawing were: 28-37-42-50-53, and the Powerball was 19. The Power Play® number was 2.
The Denison ticket was one of just four across the country to win a $1 million prize in that drawing. The other winning tickets were sold in California, Massachusetts, and Maryland.
While no one hit the jackpot on Saturday, the grand prize now climbs to an estimated $63 million annuity (or $30 million cash option) for the next drawing on Monday.
For selling the winning ticket, Kimmes Denison Country Store will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Iowa Lottery.
The $1 million prize must be claimed at the Iowa Lottery’s headquarters in Clive, where offices are open Monday through Friday. Due to the size of the prize, appointments are strongly encouraged. Winners can schedule an appointment or get more information by calling 515-725-7900 or emailing wmaster@ialottery.com.
Players are reminded to double-check their tickets. Powerball prizes in Iowa must be claimed within 180 days of the drawing date.
Powerball tickets cost $2 per play. Players choose five numbers from a pool of 69, and one Powerball number from a separate pool of 26. For an extra $1, players can add the Power Play® option to multiply non-jackpot prizes.
Launched in April 1992, Powerball began in 15 states with jackpots starting at $2 million. It has since grown into one of the most recognized lottery games in the world. Powerball is currently available in 48 U.S. lotteries, with drawings held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 9:59 p.m.
Since the lottery’s start in 1985, its players have won more than $6.1 billion in prizes while the lottery has raised more than $2.5 billion for state programs. Today, lottery proceeds help our state in multiple ways. They support Iowa veterans and their families through the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund. They help the families of Iowa peace officers, firefighters and corrections employees who die in the line of duty. And they provide help for a variety of significant projects through the state General Fund.
