(Omaha, NE) — The LSU Tigers completed a two game sweep of Coastal Carolina, winning on Sunday afternoon 5-3 to claim their 2nd College World Series in the last three years.
Coastal took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning on a Dean Mihos solo HR but the Tigers answered back in the top of the 3rd with a RBI double by Ethan Frey. With the game tied 1-1, LSU had a huge 4 run 4th inning on a 2 run single from Chris Stanfield and a 2 RBI hit by Derek Curiel to build a 5-1 lead. The Chanticleers got a 2 run HR from Wells Sykes in the top of the 7th but could get no closer.
Anthony Eyanson pitched 6 1/3 innings for LSU and allowed 3 ER on 7 hits, walking 1 and struck out 9. Chase Shores who can touch 100+ mph went the last 2 2/3 innings and allowed just one hit and struck out 4 to preserve the win.
LSU became the 6th straight SEC team to win a baseball national title and 11 in 16 years. For LSU, it was their 8th career MCWS title and all coming since 1991. Only USC has won more with 12. Tigers Head Coach Jay Johnson won his 2nd D-I title in his first 4 years with the school which no other coach has done.
LSU pitcher Kade Anderson was named the World Series most outstanding player.
