(Harlan, IA) — Lewis Central Baseball is undefeated in the Hawkeye Ten no more. Harlan’s Jonas Reynolds only allowed three hits in a complete game victory as the Cyclones beat the Titans 5-2.
LC struck first in the top of the first after a Reynolds leadoff walk to Brady Hetzel who would find a way to get all the way to third and score on a RBI grounder. Harlan answered in the bottom of the first with three straight singles from Colton Schneider, Hayden Soma and Cade Nelson plus Reynolds had a RBI grounder that turned out to be the game winning RBI and the Cyclones led 2-1.
Harlan got another run in the 2nd when Titans starter Charles Schaben hit Brett Heese to lead off the inning — two outs later Foxx Argotsinger brought Heese in with a RBI single to right to make it 3-1.
Lewis Center did not have a hit in the first two innings but Hetzel led off the 3rd with a double, Owen Duffeck brought him in with a single to make it 3-2. Blake Fort followed with another base hit but Reynolds got out of the inning with a strike out, grounder and fly out.
In the bottom of the 4th, the bottom fell out of the tub for the Lewis Central defense. Schaben gave up a leadoff walk to Weston Reisz, Heese was hit by a pitch for the 2nd time in the game, Joseph Gross got a bunt down but it was too close to the mound and Schaben got a force out at 3rd. With one out and 2 on, Landon Kaufman hit a grounder to short but Hetzel threw it away going to third and Heese raced home to make it 4-2. After Argotsinger walked, Colton Schneider hit a grounder to third but Fort’s throw home for the force play was too high for another error and Gross scored to make it 5-2 Harlan.
That was all Reynolds needed who did not allow a hit past the third inning. He got some great defense behind him with Reisz at third making two line drive catches and Gross made a tumbling catch in right. Reynolds went 7 innings and allowed 2 earned runs on just three hits, he walked three and struck out three and only allowed two baserunners in innings 4 through 7.
For Harlan: Brett Heese was 0-1 with 2 HBP and 2 runs. Hayden Soma was 1-4 with a run. Colton Schneider was 1-4 with a RBI and run. Foxx Argotsinger was 1-3 with a RBI.
For Lewis Central: Brady Hetzel was 1-3 with a double and 2 runs.
