(Washington D.C.) New legislation has been introduced to combat agroterrorism.
Zach Nunn, who represents Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, said that last week the FBI arrested a researcher with ties to the Chinese Communist Party for smuggling a fungus into the U.S. that is capable of decimating crops such as corn, wheat, and soybeans. He said the fungus could have devastated the entire country if it had been released.
Zach Nunn said he introduced a new bipartisan bill called Preventing Lethal Agriculture and National Threats (PLANT) Act.
Zach Nunn said this bill also grants enhanced enforcement authority to the Department of Justice, the USDA, and Customs and Border Protection to stop agroterrorism threats at the border before they spread, rather than after the damage has already been done.
