(Griswold) — After two months of evaluation, a committee studying the potential benefits and challenges of establishing an independent girls’ wrestling program in Griswold presented its findings to the Griswold School Board on Monday.
Griswold has partnered with Red Oak for the past two seasons to offer a shared girls’ wrestling program. While that collaboration has proven valuable, shared Superintendent Dave Henrichs noted a growing interest in the sport among Griswold student-athletes. Based on the committee’s recommendation to operate independently, the school board voted Monday to launch Griswold’s own girls’ wrestling program beginning in the upcoming school year.
School Officials believe 13 high school girls and eight Middle School student-athletes are committed to wrestling for Griswold.
Henrichs says the next step is to secure a coaching staff. As far as practice, at the current time, regardless of whether additional coaches are hired, the boys’ and girls’ practices will be at the same time, most likely in the newer elementary gymnasium.
Griswold Athletic Director Cole Cooper will begin working on the girls’ team schedule.
