Alice Rau, 89, of Portsmouth
Alice Theresa Rau, the daughter of Anthony and Elenor (Thraen) Schleimer, was born on a farm in Defiance, IA on February 25, 1936. She attended country school and St Mary’s High School in Panama, IA, graduating with the class of 1954. On May 26, 1955 she married Leonard Rau at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama. To this union nine children were born: Connie, Joan, Ronda, Gary, Jolene, Robert, Craig, Leslie and Keri. The family moved to Portsmouth for one year and then to Persia until 1968. Then they moved back to Portsmouth to stay. She and Leonard enjoyed traveling and playing cards. Alice had a passion for playing Rummikub, listening to Danny O’Donnell and always enjoyed a bowl of extreme moose tracks ice cream.
Alice died on April 6th having attained the age of eighty-nine years, one month and twelve days. She is preceded in death by her parents Anthony and Elenor, her husband Leonard, her son Gary, her brothers Charles and Raymond Schleimer, sister Eileen Pauley.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Connie (Larry) Mick of Omaha, NE, Joan (Dan) Schechinger of Harlan, IA, Ronda (Randy) Schaben of Portsmouth, Jolene (Steve) Mikuls of Omaha, NE, Bob (Donna) Rau of Lincoln, NE, Craig Rau (Julie Sonntag) of Portsmouth, IA, Leslie (Jamie) Goetz of Defiance, IA, and Keri (Gary) Holstein of Lincoln, NE; sister, Marilyn Alfers of Neola, IA; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, at 11AM, at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 8th, from 4PM-7PM at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa.
Rosary to follow the visitation on Tuesday at 7PM at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.
