Thomas Joseph Terrill Obituary, 80, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, formerly of Atlantic
Capt. Thomas Joseph Terrill, USN, (“Bully”) a distinguished naval aviator and beloved family man, passed away on March 19, 2025, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the age of 80. Captain Terrill was born on September 10, 1944, in Jefferson County, Iowa. After graduating from Atlantic High School and Iowa State University. Capt. Terrill dedicated his life to serving his country and was celebrated for his exemplary career in the United States Navy.
Throughout his service, Capt. Terrill displayed unwavering commitment and skill as a pilot. He had the honor of attending the prestigious Navy Fighter Weapons School, also known as Top Gun, where he honed his remarkable aviation talents. He flew both F4 and F14 jets, serving on the USS Kitty Hawk, USS Independence, and USS Coral Sea. His dedication and passion for flying earned him respect and admiration from his peers and subordinates alike.
Away from the rigors of his military duties, Capt. Terrill found joy in the game of poker, an interest that brought him both relaxation and camaraderie with friends and family. He was also an avid golfer and recorded three holes-in-one in his lifetime, including two during a single round, with all of those coming at Oceana’s Hornet Course. After retiring from the Navy, he enjoyed a second career in real estate in the Hampton Roads area
Preceded in death by his parents, John and Rosemary Terrill, he is survived by his wife, Catherine “Cathie” Terrill, his daughters, Amanda Youmans and her husband, Gil, and Rebecca Slater and her husband, Scott. He was a proud grandfather to Ben and Nate Youmans, and Ian and Brandon Slater, who will forever hold fond memories of their time with him. His favorite aunt, Dot Davis, also survives him, carrying forward the family legacy.
Capt. Terrill’s valor and dedication will be honored with a future inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest among the nation’s heroes. His legacy of service, love, and devotion to family will be remembered and treasured by all who knew him.
