(Lincoln, NE) — The Nebraska football team got a gift under their Christmas tree — Dane Key, one of the top wide receivers in the portal — has declared he is headed to Lincoln to play for the Huskers. Last season for the University of Kentucky, Key had a career high 47 receptions for 715 yards and 2 TD. Key was one of the bright spots in a passing game that ranked among the worst in the SEC. Key follows his WR coach Daikiel Shorts who took a similar position with Nebraska.
Key will only have one season of eligibility remaining. In his three seasons with the Wildcats, Key has a career 126 catches for 1,870 yards and 14 TD. The Huskers will lose their two receivers this season to graduation — Jahmal Banks (40-508, 3 TD) and Isaiah Neyor (34-455, 5 TD). Nebraska does return Freshman Jacory Barney who led the Huskers with 52 receptions for 431 yards but did not find the end zone. Nebraska has also added Cal transfer WR Nyziah Hunter in the portal earlier this month who led all Golden Bears receivers with 40 catches for 578 yards and 5 TD.
Ironically Key comes to Nebraska from Kentucky while the Huskers leading rusher this season Dante Dowdell had announced recently that he has transferred to Kentucky. Dowdell had 614 yards and 12 rushing TD for Nebraska leaving Sophomore Emmett Johnson as the number one running back.
Other players that have committed to Nebraska via the portal include DL Williams Nwaneri from Missouri, DL Jayden George from East Tennessee St., P Jack McCallister from Washington, DL Gabe Moore from Mississippi St., QB Marcos Davila from Purdue, S Justyn Rhett from Georgia, and LB Dasan McCullough from Oklahoma.
