(Elk Horn, IA) — Its hard to beat a team three times in one season but Exira EHK has done exactly that — on Monday night they stopped a feisty CAM volleyball team in a three set sweep — 25-23, 25-23, 25-21.
The Spartans jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set, the Cougars only got 1 point on serve until point 8 when they scored 6 of the next 7 to tie it at 13 all. Exira EHK would win 5 of the next 6 to re-establish the lead 18-14. CAM cut it to one 19-20 but it was too much Jaelynn Petersen who closed it out with a kill winning 25-23.
Exira EHK scored the first five points of set two Kylee Williamson and Jaci Eden each scored 3 points on serve and the Cougars led 8-6. Every time Exira EHK would get a point on serve, CAM seemed to answer leading 14-12, then 16-14, then 18-15 until a sideout gave Riley Miller the serve for the Spartans and she rolled through 6 straight points and turned a 3 point deficit into a 4 point lead. The 2nd set would end in a couple of calls by the officials that had both sides scratching their heads — the 2nd point was won on a CAM violation and Exira had a 2 set advantage.
The third set was back and forth to start — 4 straight back to back sideouts. It was tied at 4, tied at 5, at 6, at 7 , at 9. CAM had a slim 12-10 lead when Zoey Rasmussen served for the Spartans and she scored 5 straight points to take the lead in the set 16-12, it was a lead the Spartans would not relinquish. A Jaelynn Petersen kill would end it and end CAM’s season.
Jaelynn Petersen led way with 14 kills and an ace and talked about the win.
