(Atlantic) Dan Vargason, Atlantic High School Spanish Teacher and Coach, spoke to the Atlantic School Board Wednesday evening about the need for a secondary facility for activities. Vargason said this is something they have been talking about for awhile, but the need is becoming more urgent.
Vargason said another issue is splitting game locations.
Vargason also said that the weight room is undersized to the point that it is unsafe.
He noted that a lot of people think that gyms are just for athletics, but they are also used for academics.
Jarrod O’Donnell, High School Instrumental Music Teacher, was not able to attend Wednesday’s meeting, but he provided a letter for Vargason to read to the board.
Other items that Vargason said would be beneficial include a meeting space, not only to meet with players pre-game, but it could also be used for board meetings or class space; and then adding a training office, locker rooms, and storage.
Vargason said over 70 staff members between coaches, teachers, and sponsors said they would utilize a new space.
Board Member Kristy Pellett said this is not a new issue and it is something many have recognized.
After some discussion, the board agreed they need to decide on a facilities study so they can move forward and they need to gather information on financing options.
In other news, the school board approved the following:
