(Des Moines) The drought in Iowa continues to break records. State Climatologist Justin Glisan says this is the 175th Straight week the monitor has shown at least D0 to D4 moderate drought to D4 somewhere in the state.
Glisan says this is the longest drought record through the period of the drought monitor going back to the year 2000. Dr. Glisan says this is also longer than the droughts in the 1950s and 1970s but not as pervasive as the droughts of 1988 and 2012.
Glisan says the good news is drought conditions have improved about 25 percent from the D1 to the D0 category in northwest Iowa.
Glisan says there is also improvement in eastern Iowa along the Wisconsin-Illinois border. He says the only degradation is in portions of southwest Iowa.
Glisan says overall, there is improvement in this week’s map.
