(Treynor, IA) — Underwood visits Treynor tonight in a Class 1A Quarterfinal; coverage on KSOM.
The Cardinals beat the Eagles 28-12 back in September and have beaten West Central Valley and Shenandoah in their two playoff games. If Treynor is going to the Dome, they will have to do it without their leading rusher and one of their leading defenders in Finn Mieska who is out for the season. Senior Dylan Dreyer did run for 138 yards and 2 TD against the Mustangs last week and Head Coach Jeff Casey has a lot of confidence in him
Treynor has been very stingy in stopping the run — they only allowed 4 yards against Underwood in the first meeting and only allowed an average of 79 yards per game for the season. Junior DL Kyle Parrott leads the team in tackles with 64.5; Senior LB Austin Moss has 44.5 tackles and Senior LB Cael White has 31 tackles and Casey says he is the type of player you want on your team
Casey knows that Underwood has a lot of weapons on offense even with the Eagles leading rusher Charlie Myers out for the season
At the beginning of the season, Treynor did not know who their starting QB would be but Junior Kratyn Dirks has taken over the spot and while his stat sheet is not going to light up like a Christmas tree, Casey says he is dependable
Treynor was able to survive a tough district going undefeated and winning a district title — Casey says its a testament to their tough schedule
Underwood beat East Sac County and South Central Calhoun in the playoffs. Head Coach Nate Mechaelsen is still searching for a good start from his football team — they overcame three first half turnovers to beat the Titans. Sophomore River Allen had 164 rushing yards and 3 TD but will he get that chance tonight? The Eagles were not able to run the football against Treynor the first time but Mechaelsen is not going to stop trying
Underwood might be able to open the run if they can get yards in the passing game — Sophomore QB Nash Mitchell has thrown for 23 yards short of 2,000 with 23 TD and 8 INT
Mechaelsen says that Treynor wants to go toe-to-toe in the trenches, the Eagles are ready for that type of game
Mechaelsen says that Treynor can run but you have to be ready for the pass too
Underwood is playing in the Quarterfinals for the 7th straight season
