(Harlan, IA) – The Harlan Cyclones swept in and took a win at home against Sergeant Bluff-Luton 42-6. What looked like a close game early in the first quarter, ended up being an entirely different outcome after the first six minutes ticked by.
Harlan started things off in the scoring column in the game. The Cyclones bobbled a kick return but were able to recover and begin their charge downfield. Harlan’s Will Arkfeld passed a deep ball to Noah Schmitz and he ran it all the way for a touchdown just 1:16 into the competition. Harlan was not over yet, as the Cyclones continued to push on the offensive end. Noah Schmitz took off once again for the Cyclones as he was able to take a ball downfield to put the Cyclones in good field positioning. On the next play, Matthew Sorfonden ran the ball into the endzone for a 17-yard rushing touchdown to put them up 14-0.
After a drive that led to a field goal by Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Scott Dickson, the Cyclones continued to spin things in the right direction. With just a short pass of six yards, Brehden Eggerss wanted more as he took that initial six-yard pass and ran all the way downfield for another touchdown and to increase the score 21-3. All Sergeant Bluff-Luton could hope for was a stop in the second quarter, but that didn’t come.
Harlan added two touchdowns on the board in the second quarter. With a rushing touchdown once again by Matthew Sorfonden and a receiving touchdown from Cade Sears, the Cyclones put themselves up 35-3 at the half as the lead never left their side. After halftime, the Warriors looked like warriors on the field. They started their initial drive by marching down the field on the passing game, which led to a field goal to put them at 35-6. The Warriors relied on Gavin Warren downfield but were not ever able to get on point with the sophomore in the deep receiving game. Zayvion Ellington and Scott Dickson were the two players that really helped to keep the Warriors within at least 30 on the board.
Harlan wanted to make sure that they capped things off in the third quarter, as Will Arkfeld looked down the near side of the field, found Cade Sears on the out-route, and threw for another touchdown. That lead of 42-6 put the clock running on the board and put Harlan in the winning column.
The player of the game in the competition was Will Arkfeld as he had four passing touchdowns on the night with two to Cade Sears and one each to Brehden Eggerss and Noah Schmitz. Not only did he look comfortable in the pocket, but he played composed and became the leader that Harlan had been looking for in their starting quarterback.
Harlan will take on an undefeated Creston team that is now 4-0 on the season as Sergeant Bluff-Luton will take on Boyden Hull/Rock Valley High School next Friday night.
