(Area) The Youth Deer Hunting season begins Saturday and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources would like to make hunters aware of a new requirement.
Bryan Hayes, with the DNR Office in Lewis, said they are asking deer hunters that harvest a buck to report the length of the main beam. He said the length of the main beam can put that buck into an age class. The magic number is 14-inches. Hayes said based on research done by Iowa State University, if the main beam is less than 14-inches they are 95-percent confident that buck is a yearling.
A YouTube video is available on the DNR website on how to measure the main beam.
