(Greenfield) Iowa House Representative Ray Sorensen of Greenfield says the first funnel week has come and gone in the State House. The District #23 Republican says lawmakers concentrate on bills in their committees and push to get their priorities across that first big hurdle at the end of Funnel Week.
Sorensen drafted one Bill that squeaked by on a thin bi-partisan margin of 12-11 in the Education committee. The Bill was simultaneously drafted and run by Representative Steckman, which would grant a student a non-voting seat on their respective school board.
Representative Sorensen says some school boards didn’t like Bill because it has the word “shall” instead of “may.”
Sorensen thinks an amendment that states a student must satisfy the board’s application process first is a middle ground between shall and may by still allowing the boards to decide if a student is worthy to sit on the board.
