(Atlantic) A motion to recommend an increase Atlantic’s Hotel/Motel Tax died due to a lack of a second.
The Atlantic Park Board Monday evening discussed increasing the hotel/motel tax from four percent to seven percent with the funds going toward park improvements and maintenance. There was a misconception that these funds were going specifically toward the Splash Pad project and that is not the case at all. The Splash Pad project will be paid for by fundraising.
During the public comment period of the meeting, several individuals spoke out against raising the tax including Roger Steffens.
Kevin Mud has been an employee with Wise Motels for over 30 years.
Ryan South and Chris South are owners of the Turkey Creek Lodge.
The Board heard a presentation from Ashley Hayes on the Hotel/Motel Tax. She said Atlantic’s tax at four-percent is the lowest in the state, even with communities that are smaller. Following the presentation, a motion was put on the table to recommend the Council put forth on the November 2023 ballot an increase from four percent to seven percent for the Hotel/Motel tax. The motion died for a lack of a second.
In other action, the Park Board approved a request from Frank Saddlemire to write a grant for new signs for the Disc Golf Course at Sunnyside Park.
