(Atlantic) Eight Atlantic High School students competed at Waukee Northwest High School on Saturday, and freshmen Margaret McCurdy and Alix Nath qualified for the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona.
The students who performed in three rounds earned their way into the finals and placed first. Coach Trisha Nicewanger pointed to the two’s dedication to their success.
Coach Nicewanger says only four percent of the competitors in the country compete at the National Tournament.
The team had eight entries, including the duo of Alix Nath and Margaret McCurdy, the pair of Josie Handlos and Kayla Atkinson, Humorous Interpretation—Nick Bennett—2nd Alternate, Dramatic Interpretation— Margaret McCurdy—placed 1st, but must go with Duo, Program Oral Interpretation— Alix Nath— 1st Alternate, Program Oral Interpretation— J. Molina, Extemporaneous Speaking — Nissa Molgaard, and Kelsey Pross, Original Oratory.
