(Atlantic) The Atlantic School Board Wednesday evening approved two recommended changes to extracurricular offerings.
Activities Director Andy Mitchell recommended not offering girls swimming for the FY23 school year as the last two Atlantic Community School District swimming athletes will graduate this year.
Mitchell said when the local swimming organization came to the district in hopes of continuing, the guidelines for the program was to have 10 Atlantic swimmers. Although over the past few years there were not quite 10 students, the team had enough members to compete in duals and, in fact, have had many individuals and teams compete at the state level. Mitchell said if conditions change over time this can be revisited. Meanwhile, Mitchell said the boys swimming program is doing okay, but they will talk after the season is over to see where they are at for upcoming kids
The Board then approved the addition of a Middle School Softball program in Atlantic starting this summer. This would be a partnership between the Little League and the Atlantic school.
Terry Hinzmann said this would be great for their softball program down the road.
This would develop a 7th grade and 8th grade softball team, which includes current 6th and 7th grade students.
