(Manning) The IKM-Manning School Board on Monday approved a measure that will appear on the ballot on March 7th. The measure, if approved, would use Secure and Advanced Vision for Education (SA VE) – also knows as the statewide one-cent sales tax for education – to complete a series of construction and renovation projects at it’s Manning campus. The measure would have no impact on property tax or sales tax rates for IKM-Manning residents.
The measure asks voters to approve the use of $7.9 million in school infrastructure sales serve and use tax revenue. Superintendent Trevor Miller explains the improvements that are planned. “Help cover the costs of a new multi-purpose/gym, new locker rooms, new expansion of our spark/fire which is our STEM program. We are out of room for that and we are really expending. Our student-led business is really taking off. They are doing engraving and t-shirts. We need more room to really expand it and be a focus of our career ready and hands on experience for students. We will have a collaborative space with the district really needs to look at and improve.”
Miller says the reason for the vote is because of a petition submitted during the December school board meeting. “If there’s not a petition then the school can more forward because it’s not effecting the property tax payers at all. This is no effect on their taxes. This is one of those things they wanted to exercise their right to have it voted by the public. Now it will be a 50% instead of the general obligation bond of 60%. It’s a need for our district and has been for a while. The public will get their say on March 7th.”
The work would take place in the northeast corner of the Manning campus building.
