(Lenox) The Lenox football team will step on the turf at the UNI-Dome on Wednesday for an 8-Player state semifinal against St. Mary’s, Remsen.
The Tigers are ranked 4th and the Hawks are #1. Both teams are 11-0.
Lenox advanced to this game with a 32-8 win over Fremont-Mills last Thursday. St. Mary’s, Remsen ousted GTRA, 63-14.
Lenox comes into the contest with an average of 263 rushing yards and 5.5 rushing touchdowns per game, but it was their passing game that provided the big plays in their quarterfinal win. Sophomore Gabe Funk completed 9/12 passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns. All of the scoring throws went to Samson Adams who tallied five catches for 104 yards.
St. Mary’s, Remsen averages 377 yards and 60.5 points per game. The defense has posted five shutouts. Dual threat quarterback Cael Ortmann shined in their last outing going 10/11 passing for 158 yards and four TD’s along with 12 carries for 72 yards.
Lenox won the 2008 state championship and has three runner-up finishes. They’ve won 27 playoff games in their 18 appearances and are making their first trip to the dome since 2010.
St. Mary’s, Remsen is 20-9 all-time in the postseason. The Hawks won state titles in 2004 and 2020 and also made the finals in 2017. It’s their 4th semifinal appearance in the last five seasons. Last year they lost 42-36 to Easton Valley in this round.
The game kicks off at 4:00 p.m. The winner will take on either #8 (10-1) Newell-Fonda or #2 (12-0) WACO in the state finals on Thursday, November 17th at 9:30 a.m.
