(Glenwood) Glenwood Schools Superintendent Devin Embray is placing parents and students on notice if the district cannot run a particular bus route on any given day.
Mr. Embray says the possibility exists that a route could be canceled, and the district would need parental support to get their students to and from school.
Embray says before they cancel a route, they would do all they can to avoid relying on parents.
Embray says getting kids to school and home is the bus drivers’ primary function, and often that does not leave any drivers to bus students to activities. Embray says they have used vans, parents, and various methods to get the students to activities.
There are several issues causing the bus driver shortage. Some drivers retired or decided not to return to work after the pandemic. However, one of the larger deterrents is the new CDL licensing requirements enacted in February of this year.
Devin Embray says they have competitive wages, offer a $1,000 signing bonus, and a successful end-of-the-year $4,000 driving bonus. These incentives went into effect on July 1.
