(Atlantic) Kiana Schulz scored 15-points to lead Denison-Schleswig past Atlantic 44-31 on Tuesday night at Atlantic.
Schulz scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half, including a trio of three-point baskets. Kira Langenfeld and Sophie Sonnichsen scored eight points each, and Cambri Brodersen knocked down seven.
Atlantic freshman Paytn Harter led the Trojans with 12-points, Aubrey Guyer, 8-points, Maddie Huddleson, 7, and Jada Jensen scored 4.
Points were hard to come by early in the game. Harter broke the seal with a close-range shot to give the Trojans a 2-0 leading with 4:43 to play in the first quarter. Maddie Huddleson followed with five straight points, including one basket from behind the arc, giving the home team a 7-0 lead and a 9-3 advantage after one-quarter of play.
“I thought defensively we did a decent job early with our 2-3 zone, they started hitting some three’s at the end, but they took a lot of shots to make them,” said Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason. “I am not disappointed with our defensive effort.”
The Monarchs found the rim in the second quarter, outscoring the Trojans 13-6, and held a 16-15 lead at the break. The third quarter ended in a 25-25 tie, however, the Monarchs put the game away in the final stanza outscoring the Trojans 19-6. Schulz buried two three-point shots and knocked down a two-point try to lead the scoring spree with eight fourth-quarter points and the Monarchs hit three of four three free throws to seal the deal.
“The shot selection wasn’t bad, I thought we took some good shots, and we moved the ball early on, unfortunately, the shots didn’t fall and we started to feel some pressure,” said Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason. “We got into foul trouble, with two-or-three players making big plays sitting on the bench. We had to play timid and we weren’t getting the shot blocks we were getting early in the game.”
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, November 30. Atlantic hosts Creston, and the Monarchs travel to Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto-Charter Oak-Ute.
