(Des Moines) Jeff Zogg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, said the U.S. Drought Monitor released on Thursday shows some improvement over this past week, mainly across southern Iowa, especially southwest Iowa.
“We did have some locally heavy rainfall over the past week or so, and there has been some improvement in northwest Iowa as well,” said Zogg.
Zogg says extreme southwest, southern, and east-central Iowa have the best soil moisture conditions. He says the driest conditions are across north-central Iowa, and portions of northwest Iowa, and northeast Iowa. “It took a while to get into the drought, and it will take a while to get out of the drought,” said Zogg.
Jeff Zogg, the short forecast is for showers and storms across the southern part of the state tonight into tomorrow, before gradually ending across the state on Friday. He says the weather pattern looks dry over the next week.
About 50 % of the entire country is continuing to experience category D1 or worse drought condition (next side!). Dry/Drought conditions over the eastern US slightly improved and western US worsened, with the driest conditions are in the western Border States.
