(Audubon) Earlier this month, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed HF756 removing the requirement for a permit to acquire or permit to carry a handgun, a handgun, or firearm in public subject to certain limitations.
Audubon County Sheriff Todd Johnson says Iowans legally can carry a weapon and may still obtain a Permit to acquire pistols and revolvers or a nonprofessional permit to carry by applying through the Sheriff’s Office in their respective Counties.
Sheriff Johnson dealt with individuals with former Law Enforcement charges and who didn’t know how it would affect their right to carry after having their rights restored.
Sheriff Johnson says it’s a personal preference whether or not a person wants to apply for a permit.
Beginning on July 1, a person in Iowa attempting to purchase a handgun through a Federal Firearms License without presenting a permit to acquire or permit to carry will be required to undergo a check through the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
