(Avoca) Tri-Center hosts an 11-team girls track meet on Thursday. AHSTW will be among the teams in attendance.
The Lady Vikes have been performing well lately. They placed 2nd at Griswold on Tuesday. Coach Traye Pelzer was pleased with the way things went. “It was really a night for personal bests. We improved quite a bit on our mile times, on our 100 times, Holly Hoepner had a really good showing in the 100 Meter Hurdles.” He says, “I couldn’t be more happy with the girls and they should be proud of themselves.”
The team has shown some improvement from meet to meet, but the Griswold competition certainly brought out their best. “Each meet we’ve cut some times down. This meet in particular we just had a few people, such as Cora Comer in the 100 from a 14.4 to 13.4 to 13.5, so just with big leaps in many events and steady improvements in some other ones. It was a good night.”
A strong senior class makes up the core of this AHSTW squad. One of those seniors that’s shown excellent versatility has been Kailey Jones. Jones has scored points in the 1500, 3000, and Discus. “She just kind of does it all for us. Usually she has to turn around and run the two mile and then go and throw. She ran the two mile at Griswold and had a personal best and then went and got 4th in the discus.”
Coach Pelzer says they’ll change some things up in their lineup Thursday at Tri-Center with some athletes running some longer distances than what they have previously. He lists Ella Stamp and Bree Lurz as two workhorses for the team this season.
