(Elk Horn) Exira-EHK has hired a new PK-5 Principal.
Carrie Bauer was approved by the School Board at their meeting on Monday. Superintendent Trevor Miller says, “She’s worked in our district for as long as I’ve been there as an AEA Special Education Consultant. She has a good background and she’s been a Special Education Director before so the committee thought she’d do a good job and the board approved her so we are looking forward to having her next year.”
Miller explains they’ll fill their Librarian vacancy through an AEA Sharing Agreement. “We advertised it along with all the other rural districts in Iowa and nobody can find one. It takes a masters to be a Librarian and there’s not a lot of those out there. Green Hills hired a Librarian and you can take days and borrow to use and pay them by the day to be your Librarian and make sure you don’t lose your accreditation.”
Miller says the current facial covering requirement will stay in place through the end of the school year. The board had a strong debate, but will keep things as-is on a 4-3 vote. “We had a long discussion. It was back and forth and everyone gave their honest opinion. Then when they voted they kept in place that we will have a mask mandate through the last day of school which is May 19th. They voted on it and that’s how it went so there won’t be any changes in the current plan. Then we’ll re-address for summer and see where we are at when we come back in August.”
In other news, a bid has been approved for the staff restroom in the Exira building. TBB&M Construction was awarded the bid of $84,900. Miller says the facility hasn’t had any updates since the school was built in 1957. Work is expected to take place over the summer and be ready by next school year.
