(Area) As kayaks and paddle boards continue to grow in popularity the Iowa DNR is issuing caution early in the season.
Water temps are still very cool, even if conditions seem conducive to spend time outdoors. “Cautioning paddlers that are eager to get out on the water. We have a lot of paddlers with this group of kayakers and canoers, we just have a lot of them in the state now. What an excellent way to get out on the water. Very inexpensive way and good exercise. It’s just a good way to explore.”
Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR says to dress for the water temp, not the air temperature. “Just be safe out there because that cold water can cause shock and hypothermia. It’s always advisable to take a dry set of clothes with you and use a lot of caution and respect for that water temperature. Wear your life jacket at all times when underway, that’s always good advice.”
Hayes says to let people know your plans before you take off including where you plan to launch from and when you expect to return.
